Hello Friends,
Do you know how big is Indian Dairy Industries is?
Here are four facts about the Indian Dairy Industries.
India produced 22% of the total world milk output last year
According to UN’s Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), 186 million ton of milk produced in India against global total milk production of 843 million ton for the year 2018
India has the world’s largest dairy herd with 300 million animals and as per the data published by NDDB per capita consumption is 394 g/day.
Dairy is a source of livelihood for millions
As per Union Agriculture Ministry in India, about 80 million rural households are engaged in milk production.
India’s focus on milk production is reflected in its livestock profile
According to the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), India has 40 indigenous cattle breeds and 13 local breeds of buffalo.
Adulteration is not a major problem, says India’s food regulator
A first-ever comprehensive survey conducted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) found that nearly 93% of the milk samples tested were safe for human consumption.
Out of total milk produced about 55% of milk is a marketable surplus after self-consumption.
Currently, the organized sector accounts for about 18 – 20 percent of milk. The average yearly incremental increase in production is estimated at 6-7 million tons in the next few years. Considering this NDDB (National Dairy Development Board) has launched many schemes to encourage milk producers to associate with the organized sector so that a better quality of milk & milk products can be made available across the country.
The organized sector means all those who are procuring milk from farmers and bringing it to their processing plant for manufacturing liquid milk and various milk products which they sell to consumers.
The major challenge with these milk processors is to collect good quality milk so that they can produce good quality milk products with a longer shelf-life. This will be possible not only by collecting milk based on FAT/SNF and the bacteriological quality of milk which is possible only by handling milk from the udder of the animal to the end consumer.
Importance of Milk Cooling
Milk is highly perishable having a self-life of four hours and also under high ambient temperature which goes up to 40 – 45°C, improvement and retention of the quality of milk will be only possible by taking utmost care at the farm level as well as cooling milk to 4°C as soon as possible which prevents further growth of bacteria and improves the self-life until the proper cold chain is maintained.
The best practice adopted by the milk processors is cooling milk at the collection point itself by using Bulk Milk Cooling Tanks. The Bulk Milk Cooler popularly known as BMC in India and FCT (Farm Cooling Tank) in European countries is well adapted to chill milk at the source.
Apart from enabling the cooling of Milk at source, its advantages of a systematic and simple way of milk procurement have made this more popular among the milk processor. In addition to this BMC also have the following added advantages.
01. Enables procurement of milk from clusters located at the farther untapped area.
02. Eliminates handling and cleaning of Milk Cans as milk is collected by Milk Tankers directly from BMC.
03. Minimizes the possibility of adulation & spillage during transportation.
04. Enables dairies to lift the milk from BMC at their convenience.
05. Enables dairies to reduce overall transportation costs by regulating the lifting of milk either once or on an alternative day depending on the volume of the milk.
06. Flexible milk collection timing makes the farmer’s life easy and enables dairies to collect more milk.
07. No spoilage of milk results in higher payment for farmers.
A Career in BMC Industries
Now looking at the data you can have at least some idea of how many BMCs are required to be installed at VLCC (Village Level Collection Centre). If we consider 1000 Ltr as the average capacity of BMC and considering 20% of milk going to the organized sector the number of BMC required will be more than 70000. This requirement will keep on increasing as NDDB & Government Agencies are launching various schemes for dairies as well as farmers to channel more milk to the organized sector.
Technical manpower is required for manufacturing & testing, installation & commissioning, scheduled maintenance, attain breakdown calls, etc.
Personnel required for other activities such as sales & marketing, route selection, infrastructure development, etc both at the end of equipment manufacturers as well as milk processor end.
As such, there is no specific course or curriculum available in our country to train the personnel required for the smooth running of these BMCs.
Aspirants having technical qualifications such as ITI/Diploma/Degree in Refrigeration/Mechanical/Electrical field is quite suitable to take on this field.
You can search more about manufacturers as well as milk processors to know more about this. Grab this opportunity and take your career ahead.
